Iowa Board of Certification

Alcohol and Drug Counselor Certification

IBC has provided a new Supervisor Designate category for ACADC applicants who do not have access to supervision by an IBC-certified ACADC. The Supervisor Designate category would be defined as an individual with 6000 hours of work experience in a substance abuse setting. The Supervisor Designate would have to provide a letter from his/her agency stating that he/she is a supervisor in good standing with the agency. In addition, he/she would also have to provide a copy of his/her current applicable license or certification to the IBC office. Such licenses or certifications would include CADC, CCDP, LISW, LMSW, LBSW, LMFT, LMHC, MD, DO, Psychologist or other certified/licensed professionals approved by IBC.

The IBC Board of Directors has initiated a change in recertification for CADC’s and ACADC’s as follows: of the required 40 hours for recertification, three (3) hours must be in Ethics and six (6) hours must be a combination of Alcohol & Drug Specific and Special Populations. A “combination” is defined as hours in both areas totaling at least six (6) hours. The remaining recertification hours must be applicable to a substance abuse counselor.

There are now two levels of ACADC (Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counselor) certification available to CADC’s who wish to upgrade:
  • For applicants who wish to obtain their ACADC with reciprocity to other IC&RC states/countries, there is no change.
  • For applicants who wish to obtain their ACADC without reciprocity privileges, only the upgrade application needs to be completed (no case file presentation needs to be written). The IBC office will review the application to ensure the applicant meets all education and experience requirements; upon approval by the Board of Directors, the applicant will receive their certificate for ACADC-NR (non reciprocal).
If an ACADC-NR wishes to transfer their credential to another IC&RC state/country, the applicant will need to prepare the case file presentation and pass the oral exam.
