Iowa Board of Certification

Certified Prevention Specialist Certification

Effective July 1, 2007, Prevention Specialist  certification and recertification fees are being increased to $200.00 (for a 2-year certification period).

The IBC Board of Directors has initiated a change in recertification for Prevention Specialists as follows: of the required 40 hours for recertification, three (3) hours must be in Ethics and six (6) hours must be a combination of Alcohol & Drug Specific and Special Populations. A “combination” is defined as hours in both areas totaling at least six (6) hours. The remaining recertification hours must be applicable to a prevention specialist.

Effective immediately, certification requirements have changed for prevention specialists which enable them to have reciprocity privileges:

  • Applicants must meet current education and experience requirements, and must have a minimum of 50 hours education in ATOD. No case file presentation or oral exam will be required, however the prevention specialist must pass the new IC&RC written exam. Upon passing the exam and approval by the Board, the applicant will receive their credential as a CPS-R (reciprocal).

Written test study guides for prevention specialists are available in the IBC office and may be ordered by completing a Request for Application form and submitting it to the IBC office with the applicable fee.
